WEEK 13: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 100
For Sunday - May 30, 2010
So often for the committed Christian, words of praise are not the first thoughts of formation when communing with God. Our first thoughts will travel to the area of wants and needs that incorporate our own circumstances and the circumstances of those we hold close...[more]

WEEK 12: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 139
For Sunday - May 23, 2010
Psalm 139 is attributed to David. It is a remarkable insight into the character of God and the most intimate relationship He desires with His children, but considering David as the author makes it even more poignant...[more]

WEEK 11: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 37
For Sunday - May 16, 2010
In this psalm, David gives us a strong contrast between the people of faith and godless people. He describes the behavior and life styles of each. In light of this stark contrast, one major issue is the fact that godless and wicked people may prosper and be successful according to worldly standards...[more]

WEEK 10: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 46
For Sunday - May 9, 2010
This psalm is a song written to extol the presence of God to protect, strengthen and assist us as we face areas of difficulty within our lives. With the presence of God there is no room for fear even when our circumstances tell us otherwise...[more]

WEEK 9: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 62
For Sunday - May 2, 2010
This psalm declares the need for God, especially in a fallen world, a world in which we must suffer from the repercussions of its brokenness. Through these verses we see the contrast between a righteous life and a sinful life...[more]

WEEK 8: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 103
For Sunday - April 25, 2010
Psalm 103 is a wonderful psalm of praise. Like other praise verses that focus on the grandeur of creation, the verses of this psalm praise God for his forgiveness, healing, compassion, and redemption of mankind...[more]

WEEK 7: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 51
For Sunday - April 18, 2010
What an incredible glimpse into the broken heart of a sinner we have in Psalm 51. To at least some extent, all of us can relate with David. We see his unlikely rise from obscurity tending sheep to become arguably the most powerful leader God’s people ever knew...[more]

WEEK 6: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 90
For Sunday - April 11, 2010
This psalm focuses on the issue of time, which is very precious to each of us. Most of people never feel that they have enough time to do the things they need or want to accomplish. Life is short, so is time...[more]

WEEK 5: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALMS 1 AND 70
For Sunday - April 4, 2010
In life, there are only two real choices. There is no middle ground. We choose God or we choose the world (Matthew 7:13-14). Psalm one focuses on this principle. This concept stands at the beginning of the entire collection. This is a didactic hymn intending to call the worshiper to make this choice...[more]

WEEK 4: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 23
For Sunday - March 28, 2010
The 23rd psalm is the most universally recognized text of the bible and is certainly one of the most popular of the psalms. This psalm, often memorized and used as a prayer, expresses an extraordinary sense of peace needed in times of crises...[more]

WEEK 3: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 19
For Sunday - March 21, 2010
In this psalm, David explores how God has revealed Himself to men, and then considers what our appropriate response to God should be. David perceives that God has revealed Himself in at least two ways: through His creation and through His Word... [more]

WEEK 2: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 69
For Sunday - March 14, 2010
Containing elements of a curse, song of praise, and individual lament, the power of this psalm lies in the psalmist expression of intense anguish and unswerving devotion to God despite suffering alienation and reproach at the hands of both his enemies and own people... [more]

WEEK 1: ENCOUNTERING GOD - PSALM 2
For Sunday - March 7, 2010
Psalm 2 has been coined a royal psalm due its focus on the anointing of a new Davidic king. Some believe it was read during the coronation of the king, but little evidence exist to support this. Now it is assumed that the intent lies within the framework of God’s promises to David and his descendents (2 Samuel 7:5-16)... [more]

During our spring quarter from March through May, we have the wonderful opportunity to study several Psalms. This ancient Old Testament book has influenced the world through a poetic style and declares to us the love, faithfulness and holiness of God our Heavenly Father.

Psalms have guided the development of many of modern day worship songs. Many of the verses from Psalms are the most quoted of the Bible. Passages from several Psalms are quoted in the New Testament by Jesus and his disciples. The 23rd Psalm is one of the most familiar and most quoted Psalm not only for all Christians but to those coming from diverse religious backgrounds.

Reading and studying the Psalms can deeply influence our daily meditation, life and worship. We can use these verses as suggested by the writer of Deuteronomy 11:18-21 in which we are told to take God’s word fixing them in our hearts and minds, binding them as symbols on our hands and teaching them to our children. If we follow this prescription with our spring quarter study, we will be blessed beyond our own earthly hope or understanding. God's word can live in our hearts can keep us directed on our Journey of Light and Love to the Son.

When you go to each lesson section you will have an introduction to the Psalm, questions that will be discussed in class, and you will be able to listen to John Young read the Psalm. There are also links to the scripture text so you can read along with the audio recording.
